Mideast – Pope
JERUSALEM (AP) _ Pope Benedict flies back to Rome today after a stop at Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulcher, on the spot where Jesus is believed to have been crucified, buried and resurrected.
Benedict’s Holy Land pilgrimage also included visits to Jesus’ birthplace in Bethlehem and boyhood town of Nazareth as well as the site in Jordan where Jesus is believed to have been baptized.
Reaching out to Muslims and Jews, the pope visited mosques in Amman and Jerusalem, Israel’s holocaust memorial and the Western Wall — Judaism’s holiest site. He urged Israelis and Palestinians to reconcile, and sought to encourage the Holy Land’s beleaguered Christian minority.
