Evangelical leaders call for immigration reform this year

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ A Hispanic evangelical leader says America’s soul is tarnished by the plight of illegal immigrants.
The Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, says immigration reform that couples border enforcement with guest worker provisions and an earned path to citizenship must be passed this year.
He notes that the Bible calls for kindness to the alien as well as obeying the law.
The Rev. Jim Wallis, who serves on President Barack Obama’s faith-based advisory council, says a meeting on immigration reform will be held at the White House next week.
