Missionary describes Haitian earthquake damage
WALLACEBURG, Ont. (AP) _ An e-mail received from a missionary near the epicenter of today 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti describes collapsed buildings and a gas station ablaze.
Harvey Gamble, treasurer of Baptist Haiti Mission Canada, says missionary Roger Clark e-mailed from the area about ten miles west of Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince.
Gamble says Haiti’s shoddy construction and poor infrastructure virtually guarantee massive damage and casualties in areas that will be difficult to reach.
A spokeswoman for Catholic Relief Services says their representative in Port-au-Prince told U.S. colleagues before phone service failed that “there must be thousands of people dead.”
